EIA's average revenue per kWh from residential (home) customers, in cents, as published. Prices for recent months can be revised when EIA publishes final figures.
How it's calculated
Electricity used = watts × hours ÷ 1,000, in kilowatt-hours (kWh); cost = kWh × the price per kWh. For an electric vehicle, kWh per month = miles × the EPA rating in kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100. The EPA rating is measured at the wall outlet, so it includes the energy lost while charging. For a gas car, gallons = miles ÷ mpg.
The electricity price starts at the U.S. Energy Information Administration's average residential price for your state in August 2026: what homes paid per kWh on average, which includes a share of the fixed charges on their bills. Your own rate depends on your utility and plan; your bill shows it. The gas price starts at EIA's weekly average for regular gasoline in your state or region (week of Nov. 2, 2026). Results are estimates.
