Sega begins Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Year Two today
Sega on Tuesday said Year Two for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is officially launching later today, adding more racers, vehicles, and courses. The company detailed the update in a post on the PlayStation Blog.
Sega said Year Two brings new ways to play with friends, gameplay updates to deepen the experience, and new gadgets to master. The company said the goal was to expand the possibilities for players to refine their racing styles over time.
According to Sega, a new Duel Mode focuses on one-on-one competition instead of standard 12-player races. The development team said the mode highlights distance from an opponent and item use, leading races to “unfold in entirely different ways.”
The update also adds new Gadgets and a feature called the Super Slot. Sega said the Super Slot is a dedicated slot for one-slot Gadgets that enhances the effects of the Gadget placed there, opening more options for combinations and strategies.
Sega said a Sega Consoles Pack debuts with three vehicles inspired by classic Sega hardware. The post describes designs that evoke the Dreamcast’s rounded form and color scheme and the Genesis and Sega Saturn’s angular silhouettes and subdued tones. Sega said it used original reference data to recreate the Dreamcast’s Visual Memory Unit as part of the design.
Sega said the vehicles translate console shapes into racing components such as fenders, nose sections, body panels, and hoods, and incorporate the game’s front-and-rear combination mechanic. The post notes the Genesis Tower US required considerable experimentation so it would not obscure characters or interfere with gameplay while staying recognizable.
Sega said the Sega Consoles Pack is a bonus exclusive for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Year Two Digital Deluxe Edition and Season Pass Two.
Sega said prices have been permanently reduced. The Standard Edition is $39.99, and both the Digital Deluxe Edition and Year Two Digital Deluxe Edition are $59.99 today on the PlayStation Store.
