Vitality Works Inc. recalled one lot of 365 Whole Foods Market ashwagandha capsules due to potential Salmonella contamination, according to an Oct. 30 announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with the organism may experience fever, diarrhea which may be bloody, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, the infection can enter the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses, including arterial infections such as infected aneurysms, endocarditis and arthritis.

The Albuquerque, New Mexico, company initiated the recall after routine sampling of a single retail unit identified the potential contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated that no illnesses have been reported to date.

The recalled product is packaged in white plastic bottles containing 120 capsules. Consumers can identify the recalled lot by checking the bottom of the bottle for the lot number and expiration date.

The capsules were available for purchase from Nov. 24, 2025, through Oct. 20, 2026. They were sold online through Amazon.com and at Whole Foods Market stores in the District of Columbia and 30 states, including California, Florida, New York and Texas.

Customers who have the recalled product should discard it and not consume it. The company advised consumers not to return the product to the store, but noted that refunds are available at any Whole Foods Market location. Consumers with questions can contact Vitality Works Inc. at (505) 268-9950 from Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Mountain Time.
