An executive order directs federal agencies to use the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI.”

The order, signed Sept. 29, 2026, and published Oct. 2, 2026, in the Federal Register, applies to official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports, policy documents and other non-statutory documents within the executive branch.

The order states that, to the maximum extent permitted by law, the executive branch shall use the terms “Super Intelligence” and “SI” and will not acknowledge the usage of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in any applicable setting. The order directs that nothing in the section requires agencies to alter previously issued regulations, Presidential actions, contracts, grants or other historical documents.

The order defines “Super Intelligence” and “SI” using the existing statutory definition of artificial intelligence found in Title 15 of the United States Code.

Within 60 days of the date of the order, the order directs the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology to submit proposed legislative language to establish a federal definition for the terms. The order directs that the proposal include an assessment of whether to modify, expand upon or supersede the existing statutory definition, as well as proposed conforming amendments to existing statutory references.
