A four-member NASA crew ended a simulated Mars journey on Oct. 31, 2026, after more than a year.

The space agency will use insights from the crew’s experiences to design a future Moon Base and plan for missions to Mars. The simulation was conducted to help NASA understand how crews adapt to long-duration stays.

The Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog crew included Matthew Montgomery, James Spicer, Ross Elder, and Ellen Ellis. The members posed outside for the first time in more than a year following the end of their mission.

During the simulation, the crew tested systems and maintained crops. The members also managed limited resources, handled communication delays, and conducted extravehicular activities.
