NASA published an image article showing Webb’s view of a turbulent star-forming region called N159 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The agency said the image was released Oct. 22, 2026.

NASA said N159 is 161,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which is one of the satellite galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. The agency described the scene as a “turbulent cauldron of star formation” filled with dense clumps of gas.

According to NASA, the region has lower metallicity than the Milky Way. NASA defined metallicity as the proportion of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. The agency said this gives astronomers a chance to learn more about conditions found in the early universe and how stars formed under those conditions.

NASA did not provide further details about the observations beyond the image and brief description.
