Apple introduced a new MacBook Pro with an OLED display and touch input, which the company said is the first time Touch has come to the Mac. Pre-orders began Oct. 28, and the laptops begin arriving Friday, Nov. 6, according to Apple.
The laptop is called the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display. It comes in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes and uses Apple’s M5 Pro or M5 Max chips. Pre-orders are open on apple.com/store and in the Apple Store app in 30 countries and regions, including the United States.
The 14-inch model with M5 Pro starts at $2,899, or $2,749 with education savings. The 16-inch model with M5 Pro starts at $3,399, or $3,199 with education savings. With M5 Max, the 14-inch starts at $4,499 ($4,199 with education savings) and the 16-inch starts at $4,799 ($4,499 with education savings). Apple said eligible U.S. customers can lease the laptop through its Apple Upgrade program from $55.99 a month for 36 months, excluding taxes and any trade-in credit.
Apple said the display uses “tandem OLED” technology, which it described as two layers of self-illuminating pixels. The company said the screen reaches up to 2000 nits of peak brightness for both HDR and SDR content. A nit is a unit of screen brightness. Apple also listed a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a refresh rate that adjusts from 10Hz to 120Hz.
Apple said the touch sensor is built into the display panel rather than layered on top of it. Users can scroll, pinch to zoom and drag items with a finger, and the company said many existing apps will work with Touch right away. Apple said apps including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, Blender and Zoom will take advantage of Touch.
The Dynamic Island, a feature from the iPhone, also comes to the Mac. Apple said it will be the home for Spotlight search, Live Activities and its Siri AI assistant.
The laptops are lighter than before, according to Apple. The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds, half a pound less, and the 16-inch model weighs 4 pounds, 0.7 pounds less. Apple said the 16-inch model is nearly a millimeter thinner and the 14-inch is half a millimeter thinner. The company said battery life is up to 24 hours.
Apple said the machines support up to 128GB of memory and up to 16TB of storage. They have three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack. Apple said M5 Pro models support up to three external displays and M5 Max models up to four. The laptops run macOS 27, which Apple said includes Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features.
“The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is a monumental step forward for the Mac,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer.
Apple said Apple Creator Studio updates optimized for Touch will be available on the App Store in November. They are free for existing subscribers. New subscribers pay $12.99 a month or $129 a year.
