Google on Oct. 29 announced that users of its Gemini app can now generate, preview and edit files without leaving the chat. The company said the feature covers documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code and more.
According to Google, users can expand a file to full screen and type edits directly. They can also highlight text to ask Gemini questions about it, or have Gemini refine the file.
Google said PDF preview and editing works on both the web and mobile versions of the app. All other formats are supported on the web only. Those formats are Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code.
The company gave one example in a video that accompanied the announcement. A user asks Gemini to create a PDF study guide from uploaded handwritten lecture notes. The user can then edit the guide by hand, highlight sections so Gemini changes the text or visuals, and ask follow-up questions.
Google said the capabilities are available now to all users in all languages where the Gemini app is offered.
