Google described the design of the Fitbit Edge, a new fitness tracker, in a company blog post published Oct. 27. The post was written by Jonah Becker, Google’s director of design.
The tracker is built around a Hybrid OLED display, a physical side button and a curved body. Google said the screen is its largest and brightest tracker display yet, compared with earlier Fitbit trackers, and is easy to read in harsh outdoor glare. The company also said it overhauled the software interface to show key health and fitness information in high-contrast tiles.
The side button is meant for use during workouts. Becker wrote that sweaty fingers or wet weather can make touchscreen tapping frustrating, and that the button lets users pause a workout or take other quick actions. The touchscreen remains for daily navigation.
Google said it curved the thin body and the sensor housing on the underside to match the shape of the wrist. The company said this reduces pressure points and keeps the skin in continuous contact for heart-rate and sleep tracking around the clock.
The chassis comes in four finishes: Obsidian, Olive, Canyon and Fog. Google said the chassis is made from 100% recycled aluminum. A footnote in the post says recycled aluminum makes up at least 2% of the product by weight.
Google said the device is designed to meet a water protection rating of 5 ATM under one international standard and a dust and water rating of IP68 under another when it leaves the factory. The company added that it is not waterproof or dust proof.
Google said the tracker offers up to seven days of battery life. A footnote says that figure is approximate and comes from testing in California in 2026 on pre-production hardware and software, using default settings. The note says actual battery life may be lower and depends on which features are used.
Google also redesigned its bands, which are sold separately. The Active Sport Band has wide perforations for airflow. The Performance Loop Band uses stretchable fabric and is listed as coming soon. The Magnet Band uses silicone with magnets for the clasp, and the Metal Link Band is offered in Matte Black, Brushed Silver and Champagne Gold.
According to the post, the tracker works with most phones running Android 11 or higher and Apple iOS 16.4 or higher. It requires a Google Account, the Google Health app and an internet connection. Some features require a Google Health Premium subscription, which is sold separately. Google said the device is not intended for medical purposes.
The post did not give a price or say when the Fitbit Edge goes on sale.
