Google announced the Google AI for Healthcare Professionals Certificate, a self-paced training program that teaches medical staff how to use artificial intelligence for administrative work. Dr. Michael Howell, Google’s chief health officer, introduced the program in a company blog post.

According to Google, the program focuses on non-clinical tasks and is designed to be finished in less than five hours. It offers up to 5.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Google said the lessons are meant to keep patient safety and privacy central.

Howell cited a National Nursing Workforce Survey that found nearly one in three registered nurses planned to leave or retire because of unsustainable workloads. He also said nine out of 10 doctors want dedicated training in how to use AI effectively. The post did not give details on the survey’s date or methods, or on how the doctor figure was measured.

The certificate has four courses. The first covers foundational skills, such as finding practical uses for AI and evaluating its outputs while keeping clinical judgment, safety and privacy in focus. The second covers patient communication, including turning complex medical concepts into patient-friendly audio and visual guides.

The third course covers administrative work, such as scheduling and reviewing long email threads. Google said it also teaches learners to use natural language to build tools without coding. The fourth covers lifelong learning, including digesting clinical studies, organizing presentations and preparing for exams and certifications.

Google said clinicians at the company developed the curriculum. It said their backgrounds include internal medicine, pediatrics, critical care medicine, emergency medicine and public health. The post says outside clinical and medical education professionals reviewed the curriculum, but it does not name the reviewers.

Google said the curriculum draws on draft versions of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Artificial Intelligence Competencies Across the Learning Curriculum. The company said those drafts were still being developed when the course was first designed but reflected the overall direction of the final competencies.

Several schools are already offering the certificate, Google said. NYU Grossman School of Medicine, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Touro University are offering it to faculty, residents and medical students. Purdue University School of Nursing and other nursing institutions are offering it as part of healthcare professional training.

The post did not say what the program costs. It said people can learn more and register at grow.google/healthcare.
