United Kingdom Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sarah MacIntosh urged Security Council members to find a solution for Western Sahara on the basis of a U.S. draft resolution.

The appeal followed the unsuccessful adoption of two draft resolutions concerning the region that afternoon. As a result, the mandate for MINURSO is on course to expire on Oct. 31, according to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

MacIntosh said the U.S. resolution secured 11 positive votes and set out a vision for a political process to resolve the situation. She urged those who did not support the draft to seek a solution on the basis of that draft.

The UK representative cited the stability of Western Sahara, regional security, and the affected population as reasons to reach an agreement. She noted that generations have been born and lived in refugee camps due to the conflict.

“This is our shared responsibility,” MacIntosh said.
